Arkansas Democrat-Gazette/MELISSA SUE GERRITS - 10/10/2014 - Greenbrier's Austin Porter makes a touch down catch with Maumelle's Braylon Waits unable to defend during their game at Greenbrier October 10, 2014.

GREENBRIER -- Bad weather couldn't stop Maumelle senior quarterback J.B. Minix.

After a lengthy delay for lightning, Minix rushed for 226 yards and 4 touchdowns on 22 carries to lead the Maumelle Hornets to a 34-20 victory over the Greenbrier Panthers at Jones Stadium on Friday night.

Shortly after Maumelle (5-0-1, 3-0 5A-West) took a 7-0 lead on a 16-yard touchdown run by junior running back Jacob Acklin, with just over six minutes gone in the first quarter, nearby lightning strikes led to a 1 hour, 47 minute delay.

The game resumed at 8:52 p.m., and Greenbrier began with two consecutive long drives, both ended by interceptions.

A fumble by Maumelle senior reserve back Kuron Simmon, recovered by Greenbrier (3-3, 1-2), led to another Panthers drive deep into Maumelle territory. This one ended when Greenbrier quarterback Will Drewry threw incomplete under pressure on fourth down.

Five plays later, Minix rolled right, then cut left through a clear crease and sprinted untouched 66 yards to give Maumelle a 13-0 lead with 2:52 left in the second quarter.

Greenbrier running back Karson Matthews rushed 20 times in the first 22 minutes of the game, but Shawn Howard carried four times for 48 yards to move the Panthers to the Maumelle 11 as time wound down in the first half.

A sack backed Greenbrier to 3rd-and-17 at the 18, but quarterback Harold Ross -- who alternated series with Drewry throughout -- passed to receiver Austin Porter open in the end zone to cut Maumelle's lead to 13-6 with 24 seconds before halftime.

Matthews completed the game with 49 carries for 216 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Minix scored on the second play of the third quarter to give Maumelle a 21-6 lead at 11:04.

Greenbrier responded almost immediately, after Drewry's 49-yard pass to Porter set up Mathews' 5-yard score that put the Panthers within 21-12 with 9:10 left in the third quarter.

Maumelle scored on its next two possessions, each time with 21-yard touchdown runs by Minix, the latter of which gave the Hornets a 34-12 lead with 4:27 left in the third quarter.

Greenbrier scored in the final minute of the third quarter with a 2-yard run by Matthews to pull within 34-20.
