Cougars slide by Rabbits

LONOKE -- What was billed as a battle between offenses turned into an old-fashioned defensive struggle as the Helena-West Helena Central Cougars (4-3, 3-1) held on for their first conference road victory of the season, beating the Lonoke Jackrabbits 14-12.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Cougars got on the board first when Keon Demps score on a 13-yard run to cap off a 4-play, 78-yard drive. Keith Hays passed to Markese Williams for the two-point conversion to give Helena-West Helena an 8-0 lead.

The Jackrabbits (2-5, 1-3) responded on the ensuing possession with an 11-play, 44-yard drive. On 4th and goal, Logan Dozier passed to Justin Meadows for 7 yards and a score. The try for two failed and the 8-6 score carried over to the intermission.

The Cougars opened the second half by forcing the Jackrabbits to turn the ball over on downs with a stop at the Lonoke 48. Keith Hays later scored on a 4-yard run. The try for two failed and the Cougars led 14-6 with 6:10 to go in the third.

Lonoke responded again on the ensuing drive. The Jackrabbits needed only four plays to go 44 yards. Savonte Roundtree hit Logan Dozier on a 13-yard touchdown pass with 3:35 to go in the third. The try for two failed, leaving the score 14-12.

Neither team would score again. Lonoke started its first drive in the fourth quarter at the Cougar 36, but the Cougar defense forced a turnover on downs at the Cougar 40.

NEWPORT 50, HEBER SPRINGS 47

HEBER SPRINGS — Deandre Elston ran for 252 yards on 14 carries and scored 4 touchdowns to lead Newport (5-2, 3-1 2-4A) over Heber Springs (4-3, 2-2).

Elston scored on runs of 4, 2, 79 and 51 yards for Newport. Carl Turner, who ran for 122 yards on 20 carries, added touchdown runs of 5, 10 and 35 yards.

STUTTGART 7, RIVERVIEW 0

SEARCY — Wide receiver Jordan Dorsett ran 7 yards for a first-quarter touchdown, and Stuttgart (4-3, 3-1 2-4A) held on against Riverview (2-5, 1-3).

Malik Drasfield rushed for 117 yards and Carter Ward was 9-of-13 for 114 yards passing for the Ricebirds.

CAC 30, SOUTHSIDE BATESVILLE 20

BATESVILLE — Braylon Harris scored two touchdowns in the first quarter and another in the third to help Central Arkansas Christian outlast Southside Batesville for a 2-4A Conference victory on Friday.

Harris finished with 132 yards on 20 rushes and 2 touchdowns, and caught a 31-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter, after which CAC (5-2, 3-1) led 21-6.

The Mustangs led 28-14 at halftime, before Sam Glaze caught a touchdown pass in the third quarter and Harris capped their scoring with a 1-yard run to go up 42-14.

Noah Evans completed 9 of 19 passes for 127 yards and 4 touchdowns, while Josh Johnson caught 4 passes for 43 yards with 1 touchdown. Southside Batesville fell to 0-7 overall and 0-4 in the 2-4A.

WARREN 42, DEWITT 14

DEWITT — Justin Gorman threw three touchdown passes to lead Warren (5-2, 4-0 8-4A) past DeWitt (1-6, 0-4).

Jaylon Marshall caught touchdown passes of 41 and 5 yards from Gorman. Franklin Gilmore’s 18-yard reception was Gorman’s third touchdown pass.

Warren also scored on a 15-yard run by Trent Broughton, a 10-yard run by Kilay JSCox and a 2-yard run by Dennis Daniels.

The Lumberjacks led 21-0 at halftime.
