Arkansas Chief Deputy Attorney General Brad Phelps has been named associate general counsel of the Arkansas State University System, President Charles Welch said Monday. He will begin his duties with the ASU System office in Little Rock on Nov. 3, Welch said.

Welch said the associate general counsel position is being added because of an increased workload for the system’s legal team, which also includes General Counsel Lucinda McDaniel and Associate General Counsel Katherine Prescott.

Phelps, of Little Rock, has worked in various roles at the attorney general’s office and became Attorney General Dustin McDaniel’s chief deputy, overseeing the office’s attorneys and legal staff, in April 2010. His last day in that position will be Oct. 31, McDaniel’s office said in a separate statement.

McDaniel also announced that Chief of Staff Erika Gee will succeed Phelps and that office spokesman Aaron Sadler was named chief administrative officer and will assume many of Gee’s duties.

“I’m excited about the opportunity to serve the ASU System,” Phelps said. “As a native of Jonesboro, I’m a longtime supporter of Arkansas State. I look forward to this next chapter in my legal career and working with Dr. Welch and the rest of the system team to assist the campuses in fulfilling their missions.”

A 2001 graduate of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock William H. Bowen School of Law, Phelps also holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Hendrix College.
