Comedian Pierce to perform at JBU

SILOAM SPRINGS -- Comedian Chonda Pierce will present "Learning to Laugh Again," at 6 p.m. Sunday at Bill George Arena at John Brown University, 2000 W. University St. The Emmy Award-nominated Pierce is the author of several books, most recently Laughing in the Dark. Her latest comedy DVD is Girl Talk.

Joining Pierce for the evening's entertainment will be Jason Craff, a Dove and Grammy Award-winning performer.

Faure's Requiem to combine choirs

FAYETTEVILLE -- The choirs of St. Joseph Catholic Church and St. Paul's Episcopal Church will present the Requiem Mass by Gabriel Faure during three performances. The first will be at 5 p.m. Nov. 1 during the Vigil of All Souls at St. Joseph, 1722 N. Starr Drive. A reception will follow.

The choirs will also perform during the All Saints Evensong at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 2 at St. Paul's, 224 N. East Ave. and during a 4 p.m. concert Nov. 9 at Subiaco Abbey in Logan County.

Presbyterian sect to start church

BELLA VISTA -- Two gatherings to discuss the formation of an Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Northwest Arkansas will be held Nov. 2. The first will be at 3:30 p.m. at Crye-Leike Realtors, 3463 Bella Vista Way. The second will be at 6 p.m. in the conference room of the Hampton Inn, 4501 W. Walnut St., Rogers.

The Rev. Randall Jenkins, pastor of Central Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Ala., and head of the new church development committee of the denomination, will be present at both meetings.

The Evangelical Presbyterian Church's motto is "In essentials -- unity; in non-essentials -- liberty; in all things -- charity." The denomination was formed in 1981 and includes more than 500 churches with roughly 145,000 members.

Talk, meal depict feasts of Jesus

CLARKSVILLE -- The Rev. Douglas Neel, Bible historian and author of The Food and Feasts of Jesus, will present a lecture at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the University of the Ozarks. The program is part of the university's Walton Arts & Ideas Series and will held in the Rogers Conference Center.

An $8 buffet meal will be served 5-6:30 p.m. The lecture is free and will begin at 7.

Neel, an Episcopal priest in Colorado, has researched the ancient food culture of Palestine and the feasts and meals of Jesus' time. The buffet meal will feature first-century-style cuisine, including hummus, bulgar and parsley salad, braised chicken, split peas and peaches with yogurt, as well as other foods.

In addition to his research, Neel also has a love of cooking and owned a Dallas-based catering company that specialized in preparing biblical period feasts. He is interested in the "slow food" movement, makes cheese, brews beer, vints wine, bakes bread and brines olives. He has a music degree from the University of Arkansas and a graduate degree in theology from Nashotah House Theological Seminary in Wisconsin.

Program to focus on divine intuition

FAYETTEVILLE -- Josh Niles, a practitioner of Christian Science healing, will discuss "Spiritual Training" at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Christian Science Church, 1755 Rolling Hills Drive. The program is free and all are welcome. Child care will be provided.

Niles, a member of the Christian Science Board of Lectureship, will discuss how to hear and trust divine intuition. The program is being presented by the Fayetteville and Rogers Christian Science churches. Information is available by calling (479) 927-3436.
