MANSION FUNDRAISER

Event dodges rain to raise $54,000 to restore mansion

A tent in the garden protected a dinner buffet -- as well as partygoers -- from threatening rain clouds Oct. 12 at the Governor's Mansion, but what to do about the next part of the evening on the open lawn? Even the governor could be caught checking weather satellite images on his phone.

The event by the Arkansas Governor's Mansion Association honored Gov. Mike and Ginger Beebe and served as a fundraiser for the association. The rain held off until the party was over.

About 300 guests were able to enjoy the program by the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra on the mansion lawn. They played selections from Les Miserables with soprano Deleen Davidson of The Muses in Hot Springs, "The Arkansas Traveler" and the 1812 Overture as the finale.

Philip Mann conducted.

The evening raised $54,000 for the association, said its president, Shelia Vaught. Funds are used to restore and preserve the mansion. Presenting sponsors were Marilyn Bogle, Cindy and Chip Murphy and Marge and Tom Schueck.
