Andy Warhol’s 100 Cans, a 1962 casein, spray paint and pencil on cotton piece, will be part of Van Gogh to Rothko: Masterworks from the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, set to open at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville in February.

The relationship of late 19th-century modernism to abstract expressionism and pop art will be explored in the exhibit "Van Gogh to Rothko: Masterworks from the Albright-Knox Art Gallery." It will be on display from Feb. 21 to June 1.

"It is really exciting to get this exhibition here because it's a survey of modern art," Manuela Well-Off-Man, Crystal Bridges curator, said. "There are several major artworks in this collection."

A few of those include Vincent van Gogh's The Old Mill, 1888, Miró's Carnaval D'Arlequin, 1924-25, Jackson Pollock's Convergence, 1952, Mark Rothko's Orange and Yellow, 1956, Warhol's 100 Cans, 1962.

Well-Off-Man said each these works represents styles that the artists are known for.

The exhibit also gives Crystal Bridges' patrons an introduction to several artists never displayed in the museum before, Well-Off-Man said. This includes artists such as Frida Kahlo and Salvador Dali along with van Gogh.

"We don't really collect this art," Well-Off-Man said. "It is a great opportunity to introduce our guests to where American inspiration came from."

Many American artists traveled to Europe during the late 19th century and early 20th century, Well-Off-Man said. She said this exhibit shows how their European relationships influenced their art.

The exhibit will feature 75 artworks from 39 artists. Works by other prominent artists include Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Paul Gauguin, Willem de Kooning and Robert Motherwell.

All the works are from the Albright-Knox Art Gallery located in Buffalo, N.Y., according to the release. The exhibit will be shown at three other museums in the United States. Those museums include the Denver Art Museum, San Diego Museum of Art and the Milwaukee Art Museum.
