Police: Gunman in Leslie bakery shooting dies

A Searcy County man died Friday after he was injured in a shooting at a Leslie bakery earlier this month, police say.

John Kolata, 75, was identified as the gunman involved in the Oct. 17 hostage and shooting situation at Serenity Farm Bread in Leslie, Arkansas State Police spokesman Bill Sadler said in a news release.

Kolata shot at Searcy County deputies as they entered the bakery and was injured when they returned fire. Deputy Lang Holland was shot by Kolata in the exchange, Sadler said.

Kolata and Holland were airlifted to a Little Rock hospital, where Holland was later released.

Kolata’s body is being transported to the state Crime Laboratory for examination, Sadler said.
