Wozniacki advances

Caroline Wozniacki wore down Maria Sharapova to win in three sets at the U.S. Open and return to a Grand Slam quarterfinal for the first time in more than two years. Wozniacki beat the five-time major champ 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 in 2 hours, 37 minutes on a steamy Sunday. Sharapova received a time violation warning when she came back to the court too late from the break before the final set. Wozniacki later complained to the chair umpire that her opponent was taking too long between points. The 10th-seeded Wozniacki, who plans to return to New York in two months to run a marathon, looked far fresher than Sharapova, who's usually the one outlasting foes. With the fifth-seeded Sharapova's loss, No. 1 Serena Williams is the only woman left in the top six. Unlike the women's draw, the men's side didn't lose a top-10 player until Sunday, when fourth-seeded David Ferrer was upset by Gilles Simon in the third round 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3. Sixth-seeded Tomas Berdych swept 62nd-ranked Teymuraz Gabashvili 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. Dominic Thiem, 20, made his first Grand Slam round of 16 with a 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 win over 19th-seeded Feliciano Lopez. Wozniacki will next face 13th-seeded Sara Errani, who ended the run of qualifier Mirjana Lucic-Baroni with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-0 victory.

A's add Dunn

The Oakland Athletics have acquired slugger Adam Dunn from the Chicago White Sox, hoping to boost their lineup for the final stretch. In return, the White Sox acquired minor league pitcher Nolan Sanburn on Sunday. Second in the AL West, the Athletics were looking to add a hitter after trading Yoenis Cespedes to the Boston Red Sox for starter Jon Lester before the July 31 nonwaiver deadline. Dunn has 460 career home runs. But he struggled in four seasons with the White Sox.

• The Philadelphia Phillies have traded outfielder John Mayberry Jr. to the Toronto Blue Jays for minor league infielder Gustavo Pierre. The Blue Jays, on the outskirts of the AL wild-card race, announced the deal Sunday night. Mayberry would be eligible for the postseason if Toronto reaches the playoffs. The 30-year-old Mayberry hit .213 with 6 home runs and 21 RBI in 63 games for the Phillies this season. He'd been on the disabled list since July 21 because of inflammation in his left wrist, and was expected to be activated today. Mayberry arrived in the Phillies' clubhouse before Sunday's game in New York, and had been scheduled to fly with the team to Atlanta after its 6-5 loss to the Mets. In six seasons with the Phillies, Mayberry hit .242 with 52 homers and 169 RBI. The 22-year-old Pierre batted a combined .260 with 8 homers and 43 RBI at Class A and Double-A.

Source: Terry to Kings

A person with knowledge of the deal said the Houston Rockets will acquire guard Jason Terry in a trade with Sacramento. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal had not been completed. The Rockets will also receive two second-round draft picks and send guard/forward Alonzo Gee to the Kings, along with at least one other non-guaranteed contract. Terry, 36, started last season with Brooklyn and averaged only 4.5 points in 35 games. He was traded to Sacramento at the trade deadline and didn't play the rest of the season as he recovered from a left knee injury. Terry played in Boston in 2012-13 after eight seasons in Dallas, where he was named the league's Sixth Man of the Year in 2009 and 2011. Gee came to Houston as part of a three-team trade in July that also brought Trevor Ariza to the Rockets. The deal was first reported by Yahoo.

RB Davis doubtful

South Carolina Coach Steve Spurrier said 1,000-yard rusher Mike Davis was "sort of doubtful" to play against East Carolina this week because of bruised ribs. Davis re-aggravated the injury in the ninth-ranked Gamecocks' 52-28 loss to No. 21 Texas A&M last Thursday. Davis had missed time during fall camp with rib problems. Spurrier said Davis was in pain and his condition would be re-evaluated later this week. The Gamecocks (0-1) face the Pirates (1-0) at Williams-Brice Stadium on Saturday night. Davis ran for 1,183 yards last season, but managed just 15 yards on six carries against the Aggies. Spurrier said backup Brandon Wilds was most likely to start if Davis can't go. The coach said reserves Shon Carson and David Williams would also see action.

Ryan Blaney edged German Quiroga by 0.049 seconds to win the Truck Series race at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park in Bowmanville, Ontario. The victory Sunday was Blaney's first of the season, but third of his career. He used a pass in the final turn to give Brad Keselowski Racing its second consecutive victory -- Keselowski won last week at Bristol driving the truck. It's also Blaney's second win in a week. He won the Nationwide Series race at Bristol last week with a late pass of Kyle Busch. Erik Jones was third and followed by Gray Gaulding and Andrew Ranger. Truck Series points leader Johnny Sauter finished eighth and is seven points ahead of ThorSport Racing teammate Matt Crafton in the standings.

Jennings keeps winning ways

Kerri Walsh Jennings, who is the women's career leader in professional beach volleyball victories, moved into a tie Sunday for third place in all-time overall victories. Her victory at the AVP Cincinnati Open with partner April Ross was Walsh Jennings' 122nd tournament title, tying her with Randy Stoklos and leaving her behind only Sinjin Smith (139 victories) and Karch Kiraly (148). Walsh Jennings and Ross beat second-seeded Lauren Fendrick and Brooke Sweat, 21-14, 21-15, in Sunday's tournament championship match. The duo has won all five tournaments on the AVP's 2014 schedule and moved to 26-0 in AVP matches this season. They have faced Fendrick and Sweat in all five tournament championship matches. The men's title went to Jake Gibb and Casey Patterson for a second consecutive year. Seeded second, they swept sixth-seeded Nick Lucena and Ryan Doherty, 21-13, 23-21 in Sunday's final.
