Philander Smith locks down Sunday after chase, police say

Philander Smith College on Sunday locked down its dormitories for an hour and a half after three students led police on a chase through campus, Little Rock police said Monday.

Emory Craig, 23; Clinton Burrell, 22; and Jefferies Carvelle, 20, who are all from Little Rock and attend Philander Smith College, which is located at 900 W. Daisy L. Gatson Bates Drive, were chased by Little Rock officers after brandishing a weapon at two boys, according to a police report.

Officers began chasing the three after watching Craig pull a gun at the two boys, who were about 8 to 12 years old, at 16th and Chester streets, police said.

The officer followed the three men, who were in a car, to the college, where Burrell parked near the residential halls before the three men ran away, according to the report. All three were found in the dorms after the rooms were searched by officers accompanied by the school’s vice president, Kevin Hamilton.

All three men face charges of fleeing arrest, but Burrell and Craig face additional charges over carrying a firearm while on school grounds. Burrell also faces a charge of careless driving, the report said.

The two boys have not been found, police said.
