The Benton Police Department is investigating a Labor Day shooting that left one man in serious condition, officials say.

Around 1:51 p.m. Monday, police responded to 570 Latimer Drive, where a man was found with an apparent gunshot wound to his back, police spokesman Lt. Kevin Russell said.

The victim, whose name has not been released, was airlifted to a Little Rock hospital for treatment of his injuries, Russell said.

The victim’s condition is currently unknown, but Russell said the victim was in serious condition when he was airlifted.

Russell said James Toland, 62, of Benton was located “not far from” the scene and police identified him as a suspect after conducting an investigation.

Toland is an acquaintance of the victim, and police believe Toland was living at 570 Latimer Drive at the time of the shooting, according to Russell.

“It’s unknown what precipitated [the shooting],” he said.

Toland is charged with first-degree battery and is being held at the Saline County jail while he awaits a bond hearing.

Anyone with information about this shooting is asked to call the Benton Police Department at (501) 778-1171 or (501) 315-TIPS.
