Oral arguments set in Arkansas voter-ID lawsuit

LITTLE ROCK — The Arkansas Supreme Court will hear oral arguments Oct. 2 in the legal challenge over the state's new law requiring voters to show photo identification before casting a ballot.

The court on Tuesday scheduled oral arguments in the state's appeal over the law, which was approved last year when the Republican-led Legislature overrode a veto by Democratic Gov. Mike Beebe. Pulaski County Circuit Judge Tim Fox struck down the law in May as unconstitutional, but suspended his ruling and allowed the prohibition to remain in effect.

The state appealed Fox's ruling and has asked justices to uphold the law. The American Civil Liberties Union of Arkansas is suing the state on behalf of four voters the group says are being disenfranchised by the voter-ID law.
