What constitutes being suspended for a game?

In the case of three Florida Gators, when the game lasts only one play.

Saturday night's game against Idaho was delayed and suspended after the opening kickoff because of lightning and unplayable field conditions.

For three players -- defensive tackle Darious Commings, wide receiver Demarcus Robinson and defensive tackle Jay-nard Bostwick -- the fact Saturday night's game was suspended after one play was enough for Head Coach Will Muschamp to reinstate them and put them in the lineup for Saturday's game against Eastern Michigan.

Cummings, a senior; and Bostwick, a redshirt freshman, had been suspended for a violation of team rules while Robinson was disciplined for what Muschamp called a university sanction.

"They will be back this week with us," Muschamp said. "Not just as far as the suspension of a game, but they've handled a lot of other things for me, as well as Demarcus Robinson, who had a university sanction that's been resolved."

Muschamp had announced the suspensions hours before Saturday's opener against Idaho.

Meanwhile, the decision to reschedule or cancel the game has yet to be resolved. Florida Athletic Director Jeremy Foley said he hopes to make a decision in the next day or two.

Both teams have an open date on Oct. 25, but if the game doesn't get resolved, it's funny that three players could be suspended for a game that was never played.

Not so fast

Los Angeles Times columnist Chris Dufresne wrote that the first weekend of the college football season raised a lot more questions than answers.

• For example, South Carolina was expected to contend for the SEC Eastern Divison and Texas A&M was heading for a rebuilding year after 2012 Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel left school early to turn pro. However, Kenny Hill threw for a school record 528 yards in the Aggies' 52-28 victory Thursday night.

Dufresne called it a staggering jolt to South Carolina Coach Steve Spurrier, who revolutionized the SEC with his passing game, only to have it thrown back in his face.

• Florida State was favored by 19 over Oklahoma State and didn't secure a 37-31 victory until P.J. Williams' caused a fumble by Oklahoma State quarterback J.W. Walsh.

Wrote Dufresne, "Top-ranked Florida State showed it might not be invincible in struggling to hold off the pop-gun Cowboys of Stillwater."

• Alabama, which was favored by 26, defeated West Virginia, which went 4-8 a year ago, 33-23. Nice effort by the underdog, but don't tell that to Mountaineers Coach Dana Holgorsen.

"We're not interested in moral victories. We don't want pats on the back," Holgorsen said.

The fact that some favorites might not have covered the spread, prompted Dufresne to write, "Nobody had a worse time with getting a line, though, than the people who set the betting odds in Las Vegas. Most week you say, 'How do they get it right so often? This week you said, 'Better hold off on that casino expansion.'

Utility player

Nathan Orf, Milwaukee Brewers prospect played all nine positions for the Class A Brevard County Manatees Sunday in a 7-3 loss to the Dunedin Blue Jays in Viera, Fla.

Orf, who normally starts in right field, started the game at catcher, before going to first base in the second inning, second base in the third; third base in the fourth; shortstop in the fifth; left field in the sixth; center field in the seventh; right field in the eighth; and pitched in the ninth.

For the record, Orf went 0 for 2 with 1 walk, did not commit an error and pitched 1/3 of an inning, retiring Nick Baligod on a ground ball to third baseman Greg Hopkins in the ninth inning before being relieved by Jon Huizinga.
