• Practically all nations are represented in Argenta, and since the interest in the European war has grown so intense, a number of the "national representatives" have made a complete canvass of the city. The canvass was made by Louis Hild, an Austrian watchmaker, who gave the list to a Democrat reporter.

• Military history of sorts was made this week when a B-58 Air Force bomber flew from Houston to Little Rock with paychecks for the recently transferred members of the 43rd Bomb Wing. The flight marked the first time that military paychecks had been delivered at twice the speed of sound, or in Air Force lingo, Mach 2. The military apparently was happy with the achievement, but one man overheard talking in a Little Rock coffee shop was glum about it all. "Hmmf," said he. "If one of those checks had been mine, the money would have disappeared at Mach 4."

• What may be the largest peacetime shipment of military equipment on an American river system was expected to pass Little Rock this morning. "This is the first time since probably World War II that the Army has moved equipment like this on any large scale," said P.J. Spaul, spokesman for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Little Rock office. "There have been 10 military equipment moves on inland waters in the last three or four years. Prior to that there were none since World War II." The barge convoy, bound from Fort Campbell, Ky., for Fort Chafee and Camp Gruber, Okla., is several hours behind schedule. It was supposed to arrive in Little Rock at Murray Lock and Dam No. 6 on Sunday afternoon. But the shipment was only approaching Lock No. 4 near Pine Bluff at 5 p.m. Sunday. "The tows are too large to fit into the locks," said Spaul, explaining how the two groups of 23 and 19 barges must be separated as they go through locks on their upriver journey.

• Advocates of legalizing medical marijuana all but conceded defeat Thursday, saying it was unlikely they had gathered enough signatures to put a proposal before Arkansas voters. Denele Campbell of West Fork, treasurer of the Arkansas Alliance for Medical Marijuana, said it would take "a miracle" for the secretary of state's office to verify enough signatures for the group's initiative to qualify for the ballot.
