Tailgates, tours cap delegation's recess from D.C.

WASHINGTON -- Last week, members of Arkansas's delegation wrapped up the August recess with tours, talks and tailgates. They are scheduled to return to Washington on Monday.

U.S. Sen. John Boozman met with the Arkansas State Chamber of Commerce and Associated Industries of Arkansas on Thursday. He spoke about proposed Environmental Protection Agency regulations that require states to restrict the amount of carbon emissions from existing power plants and change how electricity is generated.

On Friday, he toured Garver USA, an engineering firm in North Little Rock. On Saturday, he was scheduled to attend a picnic with submarine veterans in Bella Vista.

U.S. Rep. Tom Cotton's Senate campaign was scheduled to tailgate Friday evening at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock for the Salt Bowl between Benton and Bryant high schools. On Saturday, he was scheduled to hold a tailgate at the University of Arkansas home opener against Nicholls State in Fayetteville.

U.S. Sen. Mark Pryor's campaign was also scheduled to host a tailgate at Saturday's Razorback game.

On Tuesday, Pryor spoke at Dassault Falcon Jet Corp. in Little Rock for the groundbreaking of its $60 million expansion project. On Thursday, he met with National Guard Maj. Gen. William Wofford in Pryor's Arkansas office to discuss legislation.

Pryor, Boozman and U.S. Rep. Tim Griffin attended the opening of the new Conway airport Friday.

On Thursday, Griffin discussed Medicare reimbursement for ambulance services with the executive director of Metropolitan Emergency Medical Services (MEMS). On Friday, Griffin visited the Arkansas Rice Depot facility in Little Rock.

On Wednesday U.S. Rep. Rick Crawford toured the TMK IPSCO Steel plant in Mississippi County.

On Thursday he was in Mountain Home to visit with a family that got a new home through the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Mutual Self Help Housing Program, and tour a Harps Food Store and discuss potential new regulations on meat processing.

Initiative's 2 state stops

The White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics begins its 2014 Back-to-School Tour next week in Northwest Arkansas, according to a news release from the White House. The tour includes stops in Benton and Washington counties on Monday and Tuesday.

The first Arkansas event, at 5 p.m. Monday, is a town hall on Hispanic educational achievement and immigrant integration at Springdale High School's Pat Walker Theater, 101 S. Pleasant St.

On Tuesday there is an 8:30 a.m. discussion about family literacy programs at Turnbow Elementary School, 3390 Habberton Road; a 10:45 a.m. discussion on the Springdale New Arrival Program at Har-Ber High School's Language Academy at 300 Jones Road; and a 1:30 p.m. discussion on early-childhood learning at the Springdale Early Childhood Center, 409 Thompson St.

Springdale Public Schools Superintendent Jim Rollins is scheduled to attend along with the Initiative's Executive Director Alejandra Ceja, Arkansas Education Commissioner Tony Wood, teachers, parents and others.

On Wednesday the tour travels to Gwinnett County, Ga. The three counties were chosen because they have seen their Hispanic population increase more than 150 percent since 2000, according to a White House news release.

Cotton's staff will be available Tuesday to answer veterans' questions at 9 a.m. at First Missionary Baptist Church, 4500 Faucett Road in Pine Bluff and at 3 p.m. at the Sheridan Recreation Center, 1511 S. Rose St. in Sheridan.

ENDORSEMENTS

The Arkansas Education Association endorsed Democrat John Burkhalter for Lieutenant Governor on Thursday.

On Tuesday, Crawford's campaign announced that former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee had endorsed him.
