A North Little Rock man was arrested Tuesday after he purportedly took a gun onto the campus of a Maumelle elementary school, police say.

Capt. Jim Hansard, spokesman for the Maumelle Police Department, said police had received reports Friday that Kevin Hamilton, 33, of North Little Rock was harassing family members, threatening to shoot and kill people and to burn houses down.

The woman who filed the report on Hamilton told detectives that she was concerned for the safety of herself and her child. Hamilton had active warrants for failure to pay fines for domestic battery and public intoxication charges and parole violations for fleeing, possession of firearms by certain persons, aggravated assault and delivery or possession of a controlled substance, Hansard said.

The woman contacted detectives again at 10:20 a.m. Tuesday after she was told by school officials that Hamilton had attempted to see their child at Pine Forest Elementary School, located at 400 Pine Forest Drive in Maumelle.

The school said Hamilton had left the campus but indicated he would return later to eat lunch with the child.

Maumelle police officers located Hamilton riding a bicycle on Edgewood Drive, about a quarter-mile from the school, and took him into custody based on his active warrants, Hansard said.

A fully loaded, .40-caliber pistol was also found in Hamilton’s waistband after a pat-down search, according to police.

Hansard said police have "specific information as a result of the investigation that leaves ... no doubt that he had the gun inside the school.”

Hamilton is charged with possession of a firearm on school property and felon in possession of a firearm, in addition to the former charges.

Hansard said Hamilton is being held in lieu of $50,000 bond and will be transported to the Pulaski County jail Tuesday evening.
