Pulaski County officials investigate Roland check theft

The Pulaski County sheriff’s office is seeking the public's help in identifying a man who purportedly stole checks from a mailbox in Roland and cashed them at a Little Rock store.

James Browning of Roland told officials Monday that he was contacted by Regions Bank about “altered checks” that had been cashed at a Wal-Mart Supercenter, according to a Pulaski County sheriff's office incident report.

Sheriff’s office spokesman Lt. Carl Minden said the checks were cashed at the 700 Bowman Road location.

Browning said he wrote three checks and put them into his mailbox at 30501 Arkansas 300 to be sent out in mid-August. The checks cleared Wal-Mart and his bank on Aug. 25, he said.

The checks were originally written for $9.92, $500 and $68.92, and the suspect changed the amounts to $100, $468.94 and $100, respectively, the report states.

A description of the suspect was not provided, but surveillance footage showed him to be a tall, white man with reddish-blond hair, wearing bluejeans, a blue work shirt and glasses.

Anyone with additional information about this incident is asked to call the Pulaski County sheriff’s office Investigations Division at (501) 340-6940 or leave an anonymous tip at (501) 340-8477.
