UA has little margin for error in bowl quest

While the world has watched the train wreck that Ray Rice's life has become because of his own actions, the sports world has moved on as it generally does.

Today, maybe tomorrow, some talking head somewhere will intentionally go against the grain and say Rice is being mistreated by the NFL and the Baltimore Ravens.

It isn't true, because most likely Rice will complete his counseling and some team will put him on its roster and football will grind forward.

Maybe the world of perspiring sports has been consumed with that story this week, but already there are those who follow college sports who have noticed that the Big Ten, an industry leader behind the SEC, has opened the season in a less than impressive fashion.

No. 8 Ohio State -- sorry, The Ohio State University -- lost to unranked Virginia Tech 35-21 in Columbus, Ohio, where the Buckeyes are supposed to be tougher than a hickory nut supper.

Michigan State, the co-favorite along with the Buckeyes in the Big Ten, was beaten by Oregon, and Michigan was shut out by Notre Dame.

That isn't just an ouch. That's digging an early hole that might be hard to get out of when it comes time for Jeff Long and his committee to decide who will play in the first college football playoff for teams playing on the highest level.

Meanwhile, the Arkansas Razorbacks are trying to come down from the 73-mile-high cloud of joy left behind following their easy victory over Football Championship Subdivision member Nicholls State last week and prepare themselves for their game against Texas Tech on Saturday in Lubbock, Texas.

It is the Hogs' first trip to Lubbock since 1991, their last year in the old Southwest Conference, and where they lost to the Red Raiders 38-21.

It was after that debacle that Jack Crowe, Arkansas' head coach at the time, decided to scrap his offense and go with the option. His plan was to keep it a secret and spring it on the unsuspecting Texas A&M Aggies and stop a two-game losing skid.

Only the Aggies found out on the Tuesday before the game, found their old defense from the days when almost every team ran the triple-option, and beat the Hogs 13-3.

In the days after that game it was reported that a Razorback student manager, feeling so good about his Hogs, bragged to an Aggies student manager about the change in schemes, and suddenly the secret became common knowledge.

Yes, those things happened before social media too.

Arkansas Coach Bret Bielema isn't changing his offense, although he may allow offensive coordinator Jim Chaney the opportunity to unveil a few plays that haven't been seen.

He's going to want to run the ball.

Texas Tech is going to want to pass the ball.

That might make for an interesting game because Texas Tech isn't keen at stopping the run and the Razorbacks struggled against the pass at Auburn in the season opener.

Texas Tech is undefeated but hasn't won convincingly, beating a good UCA team 42-35 and a not-so-good UTEP team 30-26.

UCA might win the Southland Conference, but that is a league that was beat up by the SEC last weekend by a total score of 202-10 in three losses.

There are just fewer than 2,000 tickets remaining for Saturday's game, which may not seem like many but the Red Raiders are accustomed to sellouts. Maybe the opponent has something to do with it. Maybe that's why the home team is going to wear throw-back jerseys from its days in the SWC.

As for the Hogs, it was hard to tell if they had improved from the first game to the second game. Nicholls State was overmatched from the very start.

This is a must-win game for the Razorbacks if they hope to get bowl eligible. Eight of their final nine games are against teams that played in bowl games last season.
