REGATTA PASTA PARTY

Partygoers, rowers mingle at pavilion by the riverside

On Aug. 29, the evening before the inaugural Six Bridges Regatta on the Arkansas River, members of the Arkansas Boathouse Club, rowers and sponsors gathered at the River Market pavilions overlooking the river for a Pasta Party.

Beside enjoying pasta provided by Trio's and mingling with other rowers, the evening was a chance to see the new Governor's Cup, an engraved crystal trophy, which will be awarded at next year's event to a state sponsored team.

The regatta, the first on the Arkansas River since 1936, was hosted by the Boathouse Club, formed in 2006. The club also hosts Discover Rowing clinics, says honorary regatta co-chairman Mike Coulson, who also rowed in the event. Classes are offered the second Saturday of each month and use boats provided by the boathouse. Coulson says the club would like to see more institutional support for the sport from high schools and colleges in central Arkansas.

Also serving as an honorary regatta co-chairman was Coulson's wife, Beth. Lynette Watts and Lawrence Finn were the directors.
