Former Sebastian County deputy shot to death

VAN BUREN — Crawford County authorities said Sunday that there is not yet an arrest in the shooting death of a former Sebastian County sheriff's deputy who was found outside his home.

Crawford County Sheriff Ron Brown told reporters that David Jackson was found dead Friday outside the home in a community known locally as Bidville. He was found by a neighbor who was asked by Jackson's wife to check on him after he failed to answer her phone calls.

Brown told the Times Record that few details are known about the shooting and that investigators are waiting on autopsy results from the state Crime Laboratory in Little Rock.

"We know it's a homicide," Brown said. "Right now, we're just concentrating on going door to door and talking to people."

Sebastian County Sheriff Bill Hollenbeck said Jackson, who was described as in his late 50s to mid-60s, retired before Hollenbeck was elected sheriff in 2010. Hollenbeck said he knew Jackson when Hollenbeck was supervisor in the Criminal Investigation Division and Jackson was a Detention Center deputy.

"He always had a smile on his face," Hollenbeck told the newspaper.
