Arkansas gives shade trees to elementary schools

LITTLE ROCK — Nine Arkansas elementary schools have been selected to receive shade trees as part of a state program designed to reduce skin cancer risk in children.

The Arkansas Forestry Commission announced Monday that each school will receive five trees, mulch, watering supplies and planting guidelines. The trees are planted with student input to provide sheltered areas on playgrounds. The types of trees include red maples, oaks, tulip poplars and black gums.

Each elementary school is in a separate county across the state. About 2,000 Arkansas students participate in the program annually.
