Memphis boy to serve time for killing sister

MEMPHIS — A Memphis boy who pleaded guilty to fatally shooting his sister has been sentenced to serve time in a youth facility until his 19th birthday.

WMC-TV reported that the sentence was handed down Monday in juvenile court.

Prosecutors said the boy was 13 when he fatally shot his 10-year-old sister in the head in April, and then hid the gun in the backyard while trying to make it look like his sister had an accident with a screwdriver. Police say the girl had dared her brother to fire the gun on April 21. She died three days later.

The boy pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, and defense attorneys argued for treatment that would have kept him locked up for up to 12 months. Prosecutors argued for a longer sentence.
