Head of program to aid poor to talk

The director of an Auburn University architecture program where students design and build community projects will speak Monday at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville.

Andrew Freear, director of Rural Studio, will give a public lecture at 5:30 p.m. in Room 250 of Vol Walker Hall.

Rural Studio began in 1993 to improve conditions for people living in impoverished areas of rural Alabama, according to an Auburn University website describing the program's history. Students work with communities to raise funds, and design and build projects, with more than 150 projects completed since the program began.

Freear has led the program since 2002. He also has contributed design work for the Whitney Museum of American Art's 2002 Biennial and the Museum of Modern Art, both in New York.
