UCA library shows 9/11 collection

CONWAY -- A collection of materials from the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks is on display at the University of Central Arkansas Archives through Sept. 24.

The collection includes photographs; newspapers; documents related to federal, state and local officials; and essays by writers of all ages, according to a UCA news release. The university has a large collection, and the items on display represent only a small portion, archivist Jimmy Bryant said.

Among those displayed are essays by St. Bartholomew School students in Queens, N.Y.; news releases by former New York Gov. George Pataki; and comments from Arkansas officials.

Also featured is a video of the attack and its aftermath. Bryant said the late Dale Nicholson, a former general manager and chairman of KATV-TV, Channel 7, donated the video.

The exhibit, located in the archives section of UCA's Torreyson Library, is open to the public.

Harding students create memorial

SEARCY -- Student representatives from two Harding University organizations honored victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks last week with a memorial display.

Students from Pi Sigma Alpha and the American Studies Institute placed about 3,000 flags from each country representing each victim of the attack on the front lawn of the private college's campus last week. Pi Sigma Alpha is the national political science honor society in colleges and universities.

Also helping with the memorial were faculty, staff and student volunteers, Harding said in a news release.

"I find it extremely important to have a 9/11 reminder, such as our flag memorial, on a college campus," Kyle Nossaman, the institute's student president, said in the release. "I think that such a memorial encourages students to be mindful of that day in our nation's history and to never forget the brave men, women and children who lost their lives that day and those who risked their lives to save others."
