2 counties OK'd for war markers

Applications for Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial historical markers have been approved for sites in Garland and White counties by the Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission, the panel announced.

The Garland County marker will commemorate a skirmish at Farr's Mill, a July 5, 1864, fight in Hot Springs. The marker will be placed at 629 Central Ave. in Hot Springs. The city is sponsoring the marker.

In White County, the marker will commemorate the occupation of a White County farm by Union troops in 1862. The marker will be at the Henry Morris House, 288 Morris Drive, in Bradford. The White County Historical Society is sponsoring the historical marker.

The commission works with local partners through the historical marker program to help tell stories of how the Civil War affected Arkansas communities.

The commission has approved 92 markers in 53 Arkansas counties. The commission's goal is to place a Civil War Sesquicentennial historical marker in each of the state's 75 counties by the end of the sesquicentennial period in 2015.

Counties that don't have Civil War Sesquicentennial historical markers are Ashley, Bradley, Calhoun, Conway, Craighead, Crawford, Drew, Franklin, Fulton, Hempstead, Hot Spring, Howard, Johnson, Lafayette, Lawrence, Montgomery, Newton, Polk, Pope, Randolph, Sevier and Sharp.

More information about the program, as well as monthly sesquicentennial activities, is available on the commission's website at arkansascivilwar150.com.
