Man replacing stop sign hit, killed by truck trailer

A man who was replacing a stop sign at an intersection in Helena-West Helena was killed Wednesday after he was struck by a truck's trailer, authorities said.

It happened about 9:35 a.m. as 59-year-old John E. Barefield of Marvell was replacing a stop sign at Arkansas 20 and U.S. 49, according to an Arkansas State Police report.

The truck stopped at the intersection and then made a left turn, during which Barefield was hit by the trailer, the report said. He died from unspecified injuries.

Conditions at the time were said to be clear and dry.

The death was the 313th in a traffic crash in Arkansas so far this year, according to preliminary figures.
