CARDINALS

Dwyer head-butts wife

PHOENIX -- Arizona Cardinals running back Jonathan Dwyer head-butted his wife and broke her nose after she refused his sexual advances, and punched her in the face the next day, police said Thursday.

The details surfaced in a law enforcement report a day after Dwyer was arrested on aggravated assault charges and deactivated from all team activities. He spent a night in jail and made a brief court appearance before being released early Thursday.

The arrest came at a time when the NFL and its commissioner are under fire over a series of violent off-the-field encounters involving some of the league's marquee players, including Ray Rice, Adrian Peterson and Greg Hardy. The Cardinals have deactivated Dwyer from all team activities.

Dwyer was arrested Wednesday for investigation in two altercations that occurred July 21 and 22 at his Phoenix residence, just days before the Cardinals reported to training camp. His wife left the state after the incidents but came forward a week ago after Dwyer apparently sent suicidal text messages including a photo of a knife.

In the first encounter, police say Dwyer attempted to kiss and undress his wife but she refused. Someone who heard the argument reported the assault to police, who showed up at the apartment but did not make an arrest. Dwyer hid in a bathroom and the wife denied he was in the home because the running back threatened to kill himself in front of her and their child if she told police about the assault, police said.

The next day, Dwyer punched his wife with a closed fist on the left side of her face, according to police. He also punched walls and threw a shoe at his 17-month-old son, who was not injured.

As his wife tried to call police, Dwyer grabbed her cellphone and threw it down from the home's second story. Witnesses told police that Dwyer's wife said "I'm calling the police" as she held her swollen face and clutched her son.

During his police interview, Dwyer acknowledged hiding in the bathroom when police responded to the first argument and sending a photo of a knife with suicidal threats. Dwyer denied committing an assault, although he acknowledged that he punched walls in his home, threw a phone and that his wife bit his lip during the disputes, according to the police report. As he was released from jail Thursday, he said he never hurt his son.

BRONCOS

Trevathan practices

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Denver Broncos linebacker Danny Trevathan is practicing for the first time since breaking his left leg Aug. 12.

The team's leading tackler a year ago, Trevathan is expected to miss one more game and then return Oct. 5 against Arizona following the team's bye week.

Trevathan, a sixth-round draft choice out of Kentucky in 2012, is coming off a breakout season in which he led the Broncos with 124 tackles and intercepted three passes. He also led the team with two dozen tackles in the playoffs.

Brandon Marshall has started in his absence and leads the Broncos (2-0) with 17 tackles.

Defensive tackle Marvin Austin also practiced Thursday after returning from North Carolina, where his father was seriously injured in a rollover accident.

CHIEFS

Charles shows up

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Running back Jamaal Charles showed up for practice Thursday, albeit in a limited capacity, despite a high ankle sprain sustained last Sunday against Denver.

Charles did not participate Wednesday and there were fears that one of the game's dynamic play-makers could miss several weeks. Chiefs Coach Andy Reid has not said whether there is a chance Charles will be available for Sunday's game in Miami.

Pro Bowl safety Eric Berry, who is sidelined by a sprained ankle, remained out of practice. Rookie wide receiver De'Anthony Thomas also did not practice after returning Wednesday from a hamstring injury that has caused him to miss the first two games.

Linebacker Tamba Hali was limited in practice. He's expected to play against the Dolphins.

REDSKINS

Jackson still out

ASHBURN, Va. -- DeSean Jackson remains unable to practice as the Washington Redskins prepare to face the Philadelphia Eagles.

The three-time Pro Bowl receiver is recovering from a sprained left shoulder. He wore a white visor instead of a helmet to Thursday's practice and sat on a stationary bike while his teammates were stretching.

"We're going to push him a little bit more tomorrow to see where he's at," Coach Jay Gruden said.

Gruden said it's possible that Jackson could play a full game or perhaps 20-30 plays, depending on how the shoulder feels.

Jackson has been looking forward to facing the Eagles, who released him in March. He was hurt in the first quarter of Sunday's victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

BILLS

Woods sits out

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- Buffalo Bills starting receiver Robert Woods was held out of practice, a day after hurting his ankle.

Woods told The Associated Press that he spent Thursday having the injury treated. Woods is confident he will play Sunday, when the Bills (2-0) host the San Diego Chargers (1-1).

The second-year player walked with only a slight limp.

Rookie wide receiver Sammy Watkins said Woods took part in a walk-through earlier in the day.

Coach Doug Marrone provided no details on the nature or seriousness of the injury except to say Woods was hurt near the end of practice Wednesday.

Marrone wouldn't speculate on whether Woods will be able to play Sunday.

Watkins was listed as practicing fully despite a nagging rib injury.

RAVENS

Flacco back after illness

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco has returned to practice one day after missing workouts with an illness.

Flacco said Thursday that he had picked up a stomach virus from his son.

He said he felt beter, adding that he "didn't want to get the whole team sick."

Flacco, who has never missed a start, said he could not recall missing a practice before, either. Flacco is expected to make his 99th consecutive regular-season start Sunday when the Ravens play at Cleveland.

Flacco completed 21 of 29 passes for 166 yards and 2 touchdowns to lead the Ravens (1-1) to a 26-6 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers last week.
