Benton beats Greenbrier with points

BENTON -- Junior quarterback Cason Maertens passed for four touchdowns and ran for another to lead the Benton Panthers to a 52-32 victory over the Greenbrier Panthers Friday night.

Benton finished with 720 yards offense.

Maertens scored on a 10-yard run and threw 2 scoring passes to Sam Baker, 1 to Casey Green and 1 to Drew Harris, all in the first half, as Benton (2-0-1) led 45-26 at halftime.

Maertens finished 33 of 42 passing for 413 yards. He also added 29 yards on 3 carries.

Greenbrier (2-1) raced to a 14-0 lead, scoring on a 9-yard run by Karson Matthews, and after recovering an onside kick, added a score on a 12-yard pass from Witt Drewey to Michael Spainhour with 6:38 left in the first quarter.

Drewer completed 14 of 28 passes for 183 yards.

Benton tied the game before the first quarter ended.

Maertens hit Green, who caught 9 for 94, on a 10-yard pass and Maertens scored on a 10-yard run to end the first quarter at 14-14.

The Panthers took a 21-14 lead early in the second quarter on Maertens' 3-yard pass to Baker and Grant Hinze's third successful extra point.

Harold Ross' 6-yard pass to Cole Shaw got Greenbrier back to within 21-20, but a two-point conversion failed, and that was as close as it would get.

Benton countered with a 61-yard touchdown pass from Maertens to Harris, who caught 12 passes for 174 yards. The Panthers made it 35-20 on Maertens' second touchdown pass to Baker, who caught 7 for 70, with 3:37 left in the half.

Ross, who hit 17 of 27 passes for 270 yards, hit Drew Blacksmith with a 20-yard TD pass to trim the lead to 35-26 with 1:53 left in the half.

Benton added a 19-yard field goal on the final play of the half to lead 45-26.

Benton's Chase Shamlin, who rushed 15 times for 129 yards, scored his team's final touchdown on a 6-yard scoring run after Ross had hit Matthews, who rushed for 54 yards and caught 6 passes for 48 yards, for Greenbrier.

Greenbrier finished with 496 yards.

RUSSELLVILLE 35,

POTTSVILLE 28

RUSSELLVILLE — Kentrell Scott scored on a 17-yard run with 4:48 left and Michael Mullen’s two-point conversion pass to Co-Chese Temple-Laws gave Russellville a comefrom-behind victory.

Russellville (2-1) trailed 28-13 at halftime, but Mullen threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Temple-Laws and a 72-yard pass to Tony Jones to get within 28-27 heading into the fourth quarter.

Pottsville (1-2) was shut out in the second half after Austin Moore scored on a 1-yard run to give it a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, Josh Dugger scored on runs of 26 and 7 yards and Taylor Waddell scored on a 16-yard run to make it 28-13 at halftime.

Jones also returned a kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown for Russellville.

DUMAS 30,

DUMAS — Will Gragg caught two touchdown passes to give Dumas (1-2) its first victory of the season, beating Little Rock Hall (0-2-1).

The Bobcats led 16-0 at halftime.

SILOAM SPRINGS 44,

CLAREMORE (OKLA.) 7

CLAREMORE, Okla. — Chris Lampton ran for two touchdowns and passed for another and Ricky Hughes ran for two more scores as Siloam Springs (2-1) handled Claremore (1-2) in a nonconference game.

Lampton threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Parker Baldwin, who also had a 55-yard pass.

Siloam Springs piled up 455 yards of offense, while the defense held Claremore to 141 yards and didn’t allow a touchdown.

Claremore scored its only touchdown on an interception return.

NETTLETON 35,

MOUNTAIN HOME 8

JONESBORO — Joe Frazier ran for two touchdowns to help Nettleton to a 20-point first quarter of an easy victory.

Jaylin Small also caught a touchdown pass from Stanley Wilson in the first quarter, and ran for a touchdown in the second quarter for Nettleton (2-1).

Jaylin Small threw a touchdown pass to Hunter Smith to give Nettleton a 35-0 lead at halftime.

Mountain Home fell to 0-3.

BLYTHEVILLE 51,

MARION 0

BLYTHEVILLE — Issac Kelly returned two interceptions for touchdowns in the first quarter to pace Blytheville (3-0) to a blowout victory over Marion (0-3).

Kelly now has four interception returns for touchdowns this season.

DeMadre Clark ran for 117 yards in the first half for Blytheville, which ran for 311 total yards.

His brother, DeMekko Clark, scored on a 37-yard pass.

MORRILTON 35, SEARCY 28

MORRILTON — Terrence Minor scored three second-half touchdowns and Morrilton outscored Searcy 28-7 in the second half to rally for a victory. Trailing 21-7 at halftime, Minor caught a 41-yard touchdown pass from Jalen Wright, then scored on an 81-yard run to get Morrilton within 28-21 heading into the fourth quarter. Wright scored on a 1-yard run to make it 28-28, then Minor scored on a 13-yard for the eventual game-winner.

Minor rushed 22 times for 274 yards and 3 touchdowns. Wright rushed 15 times for 143 yards and 2 touchdowns. Searcy (1-2) led 14-0 after the first quarter.

EL DORADO 21,

MAGNOLIA 12

MAGNOLIA — El Dorado (2-1) rebounded from a loss in Louisiana the week before to beat Magnolia (2-1). The Wildcats lost 41-7 to Shreveport Byrd last week, but took care of the previously undefeated Panthers on the road.

The Wildcats scored first on a 5-yard run by Gemetre Miller with 5:20 to play in the first quarter for a 7-0 lead.

Magnolia answered at the 4:42 mark on a 1-yard run by Justin Dockery. Austin Miller missed the point-after attempt, leaving the score 7-6. After two scoreless quarters, the Wildcats scored with 11:33 to play in the fourth to make it 14-6 on a 2-yard run by Miller.

El Dorado made it 21-6 on a 3-yard run by Miller with 5:28 left. Magnolia scored on a 5-yard run by Mysoky Jones. The 2-point attempt failed, leaving the final score 21-12.

BOSSIER PARKWAY (LA.) 41, NO. 5 TEXARKANA 14

BOSSIER CITY, La. — A trio of Bossier Parkway (La.) tailbacks, Stacy McCray, William McKnight and Demetrius McAtee, combined for 34 points in Parkway’s lopsided victory over Texarkana (2-1) at Preston Crownover Stadium.

McKnight scored two touchdowns and threw for another. McCray also scored twice and tallied 78 all-purpose yards. McAtee caught a touchdown and connected on 5-of-6 extra points.

Quarterback Keondre Wudtee threw for 140 yards and two touchdowns. Artravious Lynn hauled in four passes for a game-high 63 passing yards and a score.

Texarkana was led by running back Torrean Gaither, who rushed for 55 yards and 1 touchdown. Quadarius Cheatham followed up with 47 yards on the ground.

NO. 6 JONESBORO 45, BATESVILLE 31

JONESBORO — Three different Jonesboro players scored in the third quarter to help it pull away from a halftime tie. Tied 21-21 at halftime, Brian Mitchell scored on a 12-yard run to put the Hurricane (2-1) up 28-21, then Kedren Brunson caught a 19-yard pass from Carson Coats and Deavon Binion scored on a 14-yard run to put them up 42-21.

Batesville’s Osvoldo Espericueta kicked a 47-yard field goal to get within 42-24, but Will Brandt kicked a 23-yard field goal for Jonesboro.

Carson Coats completed 12 of 19 passes for 191 yards with 1 touchdown and 1 interception. Darren Beasley carried 12 times for 105 yards for the Hurricane.

Justin Gallant caught touchdown passes of 74 and 13 yards for Batesville (2-1) in the second quarter.
