Gunmen fire at U.S. marshals

A manhunt ensued Friday night for the people who shot at U.S. marshals from a residence inside a trailer park east of Vilonia, officials said.

Faulkner County sheriff’s Chief Deputy Matt Rice said the sheriff’s office received a call from the marshals about 7:15 p.m. Friday when the the lawmen were met with gunfire while investigating near Stanley Road, about a mile east of the Vilonia bypass.

Rice said the sheriff ’s office sent deputies to help search for the shooters and were told by the marshals the gunmen were nearby.

Arkansas State Police spokesman Bill Sadler said the state police sent a SWAT team and officers, as well as a helicopter, to help with the search; however, no gunmen had been located by midnight.

No one was hurt in the exchange.

The U.S. Marshals Service declined to comment Friday.
