CLASS 5A SUPER SIX

PA's Hefley, Hastings lead rout

WARREN -- Senior quarterback Will Hefley completed 28 of 36 passes for 426 yards and 4 touchdowns in Pulaski Academy's 50-21 nonconference victory over Warren on Friday night at Jim Hurley Jr. Stadium.

Pulaski Academy (2-1) applied the Arkansas Activities Association sportsman rule with 10:02 remaining in the game after junior back Tre Bruce scored on a 1-yard run and senior Will Hastings kicked the extra point.

Hastings also caught 12 passes for 234 yards and 2 touchdowns and kicked a 20-yard field goal with 1:53 left in the second quarter to give Pulaski Academy a 24-7 halftime lead.

Hastings' extra point following Bruce's touchdown pushed Pulaski Academy's lead to 50-15 -- a 35-point scoring difference that started a continually running clock under the sportsmanship rule.

The Class 5A Bruins were playing their third consecutive road game this fall, opening the season in Texas and Florida.

"I was really, really concerned about our legs," Pulaski Academy Coach Kevin Kelley said. "One of the things we pride ourselves on is playing fast and getting into the other team's legs. I was hoping that it wouldn't get into our legs. Thank goodness, we were in good enough condition that it didn't make a difference."

The Class 4A Lumberjacks (1-2) only led once, 7-6, after senior tailback Kilay Cox scored on a 9-yard run with 6:09 left in the first quarter.

But Pulaski Academy bolted to a 24-7 halftime lead behind Hefley, who has orally committed to Tulsa, and Hastings.

Hefley finished the half 19 of 26 for 302 yards and 3 touchdowns. Hastings caught 10 passes for 205 yards, including a 6-yard touchdown pass with 10:53 left in the first half to give the Bruins the lead for good, 14-7.

Hefley followed with a 25-yard screen pass for a touchdown to sophomore tailback Myles Fells with 7:11 left in the first half.

Hefley also threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Bruce with 8:30 left in the first quarter.

In the second half, Hefley threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Hastings.

Cox finished with 109 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns on 16 carries.
