9 p.m. closing timeset for all city parks

All 33 neighborhood parks in the city will now close at 9 p.m. and reopen at 6 a.m., the city Parks and Recreation Commission approved unanimously last week.

In addition, the area between the two White Oak Bayou bridges in Burns Park now will be closed from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. This is the area where Victory Lake and the Burns Park soccer complex are.

The parks have had an official closing time of midnight, though several neighborhood parks had previously changed their closing times to 9 p.m. after complaints of late-night activities from either residents, parks staff members or city aldermen, Parks Director Bob Rhoads said.

The decision by the Parks Commission makes all closing times uniform, Rhoads said.

"We have had some neighborhood parks where the neighbors were having problems with people making noise or whatever after 9 o'clock," Rhoads said. "We decided to try closing all of the neighborhood parks at 9 o'clock. A lot of those parks had already been changed to 9 o'clock."

Exceptions to the 9 p.m. closing time will be for special events, rentals and other approved activities, with the extended time to be approved by the Parks and Recreation Department.

A map of all city parks is at the Parks Department's website, nlrpr.org under the Neighborhood Parks heading.
