Susan Duke lauded for community service

The Walton Arts Center hosted a reception Sept. 12 to mark the opening of Sedrick Huckaby's "Portraits of Community: Hidden in Plain Sight" exhibition. The collection consists of mixed media, paintings, drawings and lithographs.

Images of quilts are a continuing theme in his works, stemming from a childhood of growing up in a home filled with quilts made by his grandmother.

Those embarking on the exhibition included Cheryl Vogel, Andrea Packard, Sabine Schmidt and Don House, Peter Lane, Jenni Taylor Swain and Jennifer Ross.

The Donna and Brian Buell family welcomed the 25th annual Polo in the Ozarks to benefit Life Styles Inc. on Sept. 13. Aside from the traditional polo match, tailgates and dinner, this year's event also carried on a newer tradition of a hat contest for ladies and bow tie contest for gentlemen. Courtney Norton and daughter Lawson won the hat contest. BOW TIE WINNER won the bow tie contest.

One of the longest-running fundraisers in Northwest Arkansas, Polo in the Ozarks brought in more than $175,000 as it marked its silver anniversary.

Among those getting chukkered up were Alexandra and Matt Buell, Allison and Josh Tritt, Jennifer and Edward Prewitt, Janice Stanesic, Carol and Bill Hart, Sue and David Van Bebber, Karen and Warren McDonald, Patric Brosh, Debbie Evans, Joanna and Patrick Taylor, Eva Madison and David Pieper, Sara and Jim Widmer, Sheri Rothwell and Woody Bassett, Denise Garner, Kathy Jaycox and Betsy Phillips.

The Northwest Arkansas Business Women's Conference on Tuesday at the John Q. Hammons Center in Rogers concluded with a VIP reception at Pinnacle Country Club in honor of the conference's Athena Award honoree, Susan Duke.

Susan, an active community volunteer, was selected as the 2014 honoree for her dedication to and work for area nonprofit organizations that include Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Northwest Arkansas, Saving Grace, Loving Choices Pregnancy Center and the Samaritan Community Center. The afternoon reception doubled as a fundraiser for CASA of Northwest Arkansas.

Among those gathering in support of Susan and CASA were Krista Khone, Lori Walker, Tina Winham, Liz Cox, Christina Lusk, Kim Tisdale, Deanne Witherspoon, Kelli Gemmell, Martine Pollard, Joan Clifford, Laura Kellams and Jody Dilday.
