SHINE A LIGHT ON LITERACY

Teachers and students join for 'educational' fundraiser

Four shining examples of how tutoring and reading classes could help struggling adult readers in central Arkansas were introduced Sept. 13 at the Governor's Mansion. Two students -- Sammy King and Cristina Alvescentral -- and two tutors -- Bridget Farris and Faye Graham -- shared their stories at Shine a Light on Literacy, a fundraiser for Literacy Action Arkansas.

The evening began with guests enjoying a buffet of finger foods, music by The Jellies and a wine pull. The evening ended after a Fund a Need auction with Tom Brannon and Brad Wooley where partygoers could specify which program of the organization their donations would go toward.

The nonprofit has the mission to teach reading skills to adults and English language skills for immigrant adults. First lady Ginger Beebe served as honorary chairman of the event and Phyllis Haynes was chairman. Presenting sponsor was Landers Fiat.
