Man killed after car overturns, hits tree in Hope

A 25-year-old Hope man died early Sunday after his car veered off the road, overturned and hit a tree, authorities said.

It happened about 2:10 a.m. as Emmanuel Rodgers drove a 2006 Chevy Malibu east on Avenue H near Walker Street in Hope, Arkansas State Police said.

According to a crash report, the Malibu went off the south side of the street, overturned and then hit a tree. Rodgers died at the scene.

A 21-year-old passenger, Carbrienna Johnson of Hope, was taken to Christus St. Michael Health System in Texarkana, Texas, police said. The extent of her injuries wasn't clear.

Conditions at the time of the single-vehicle wreck were said to be clear and dry.

The death marked the 316th fatality in a traffic crash in Arkansas so far this year and was one of two reported in the state Sunday, according to preliminary figures.
