'Yoga Under the Bridge' offers free class

Yes!Yoga in Cotter invites anyone in north-central Arkansas who is interested in yoga to check it out during a free class at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

Weather permitting, the class will meet on the basketball court at Big Spring Park under the R.M. Ruthven Bridge.

Also called the Cotter Bridge, this 1930 structure's concrete arches span the White River. It will be the backdrop for two hours of beginner-friendly practice led by Melinda Motley and Rebecca Smith, certified yoga teachers.

Motley has taught hatha yoga for more than five years in Baxter and Marion counties and has earlier teaching experience out of state. Smith has taught in the Iyengar style for 15 years.

"Yoga's such a growing trend. It's been on the upswing for a decade or more. I'm really grateful to be involved and teaching," Motley said Thursday.

"We have a lot of retirees here. I'm finding a wonderful niche market with the retiree population and seniors, and people in their 40s. I've taught people into their 90s. We're not excluding anyone."

This second annual "Yoga Under the Bridge" event is in observance of National Yoga Month. Participants will need a mat and a large towel.

"Last year we had 24 or 25 people, and everybody was at mixed levels," Motley said. "I brought chairs down because some people needed a chair to sit in. I think this year it will certainly be beginner-friendly.

"I have a studio now, which I didn't have last year. So if it rains, everything will just move to the studio."
