The marshals were looking for Jesse Herring, 25, who had warrants for his arrest for failing to register as a sex offender and violating parole. While searching for Herring on Friday, the officers entered a trailer in the 200 block of Stanley Road in Vilonia. Herring was not inside.

The officers heard three gunshots from outside, and a bullet pierced the trailer wall, Kevin Sanders, supervisor for the District of Eastern Kansas fugitive squad, said Saturday.

The officers were able to duck for cover, and no one was injured.

U.S. Marshals Service officials -- along with members of the Arkansas State Police, Faulkner County Special Weapons and Tactics squad and other agencies -- searched for the shooter Friday night into Saturday.

According to a statement issued by the Faulkner County sheriff's office Saturday, authorities determined that the gunfire came from a home adjacent to the trailer, and they identified the gunman as Charlie Ray Richards, 24, of Vilonia.

Richards was arrested "without incident" at 9:15 p.m. Saturday and booked into the Faulkner County jail, according to the statement. Richards remained on the jail's roster in lieu of bond late Sunday. Faulkner County sheriff's deputies said Richards will face federal criminal charges.

Herring -- the man whom marshals were searching for when they were shot at -- was arrested by North Little Rock police Sunday.

Sanders said Saturday that officers chased Herring on Friday as he drove a stolen vehicle. They lost track of him after he fled onto some back roads, Sanders said.

North Little Rock police spotted Herring in a vacant house at 4916 Pike Ave. about 12:30 a.m. Sunday, according to an arrest report. Police said Herring fled out of an open window and through the backyard.

Police caught Herring and used a stun gun on him when he struggled, according to the report. Herring was arrested and booked into the Pulaski County jail on charges of criminal trespass, fleeing, refusal to submit to arrest and failing to register as a sex offender.

Herring's bail was set at $6,500, and he had a parole hold placed on his custody. He remained on the jail's roster late Sunday.
