Alumnus to start UA scholarship

A Lowell man is establishing a scholarship for students from underrepresented groups in Arkansas to attend the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville.

Richard Greene is establishing the scholarship through the Camden E. and Dortha Sue Greene Foundations, the university announced Wednesday. The scholarship will be named for Richard Green’s parents, with the award to be known as the Camden E. and Dortha Sue Greene CARE Endowed Scholarship.

CARE is an acronym for the College Access Responsibility Endeavor.

“Adding to the diversity of our campus is always a top priority for us,” Chancellor G. David Gearhart said in a statement. “This remarkable gift is establishing the first scholarship of its kind — one aimed at supporting underrepresented students from Arkansas who are academically strong and show financial need as well.”

The first scholarships will be awarded next fall to incoming freshmen, with four to six scholarships given out in amounts of approximately $4,000 annually. The awards will be renewable for up to four years, so long as a student maintains a 3.0 grade-point average. In making the announcement, UA stated that first-generation college students are particularly encouraged to apply for the awards.

Richard Greene, a UA alumnus, has previously given large gifts to support UA, including a $400,000 gift announced in 2010 to support diversity outreach programs and scholarships.
