Arkansas woman kills 650-pound alligator

LEWISVILLE — An Arkansas woman and her hunting team have killed a 10-foot, 6-inch alligator at a private lake near Lewisville.

The Texarkana Gazette reported that Denise Smillie harpooned and fatally shot the 650-pound reptile last week.

Smillie, her husband, son and others went to the lake near the Red River at night. She says it took two harpoons and 45 minutes of struggle to bring the alligator to the surface, where she killed it with a 12-gauge shotgun.

They had to hold the gator in the water as they made their way to shore because it was too big to fit in the boat.

The skull will be bleached and added to the family's trophy room. Smillie says she isn't going to use the hide for boots or heels but that the meat tastes good.
