One killed, two hurt in head-on collision in Randolph County

A 74-year-old passenger was killed and both drivers were hurt in a head-on collision between two vehicles Wednesday afternoon in Randolph County, authorities said.

Arkansas State Police reported a 2003 Ford driven by 42-year-old Tony L. Carter of Paragould was traveling south on U.S. 67 south of Pocahontas when it crossed the centerline, hitting a northbound 2007 Toyota head-on. It happened shortly after 2 p.m. near Tenco Road.

Dorothy S. Jones of Maynard, a passenger in the Toyota, died at the scene. The Toyota driver, 48-year-old Sharon L. Gilbert of Maynard, and Carter were both taken to the hospital with unspecified injuries.

It wasn't clear what caused the wreck. Conditions at the time were said to be clear and dry.

The death was the 323rd in a traffic crash in Arkansas so far this year, according to preliminary figures.
