Landowner pleads innocent in slaying

A Cedarville man has pleaded innocent to second-degree murder in the Aug. 2 shooting death of a man who wouldn’t leave his property, according to Crawford County Circuit Court records.

Court records showed that Nathan Rotramel, 31, entered the plea Tuesday. His court-appointed attorney waived court arraignment on the charge Tuesday. He was being held in the county jail Thursday in lieu of $75,000 bond.

The criminal complaint against Rotramel alleged he knowingly caused the death of Montie Brian Fisher “under circumstances manifesting extreme indifference to the value of human life.”

Rotramel is accused of shooting Fisher in the leg and head with a .22-caliber rifle when Fisher went to Rotramel’s home and wouldn’t leave despite Rotramel’s orders to get off his property.

An affidavit with an arrest warrant issued Sept. 16 states that Fisher went to Rotramel’s home and began knocking on his door and the side of the mobile home.

Rotramel pretended not to be home, but Fisher, unarmed and dressed only in shorts, made statements that he was God. Rotramel opened a bedroom window and told Fisher to leave, the affidavit states.

Fisher, according to the affidavit, pointed his finger at Rotramel as if pretending to shoot him. Rotramel pointed the rifle out the window and shot Fisher in the leg and then in the head, killing Fisher, the affidavit states.

The affidavit states that an autopsy showed Fisher died from multiple gunshot wounds, and the manner of death was homicide.
