Bounty-hunting 'Dog' talk, chamber series kickoff set

Correction: Duane “Dog” Chapman, aka “Dog the Bounty Hunter,” has canceled a Sept. 30 show at Fayetteville’s Walton Arts Center. The cancellation came after the Sunday Style section, which contains a notice on the show, came off the press.

Bounty hunter, reality TV star and author Duane "Dog" Chapman (of CMT's Dog and Beth: On the Hunt and A&E's discontinued Dog the Bounty Hunter) will discuss his life story and experiences -- including his journey from "ex-con to icon" and tales of the notorious fugitives he has captured -- at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Fayetteville's Walton Arts Center, 495 W. Dickson St.

Rhapsodic opening I

The Arkansas Symphony Orchestra opens its 2014-15 River Rhapsodies Chamber Music Series at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Grand Hall, Clinton Presidential Center, 1200 President Clinton Ave., Little Rock.

The orchestra's Quapaw Quartet -- Eric Hayward and Meredith Maddox Hicks, violins; Katrina Weeks, viola; and David Gerstein, cello -- will play the String Quartet No. 14 in d minor, D.810, "Death and the Maiden," by Franz Schubert. David Renfro, horn; Geoffrey Robson, violin; and May Tsao-Lim, piano, will play the Trio in E-flat major for horn, violin and piano, op.40, by Johannes Brahms. The Rockefeller Quartet -- Katherine Williamson and Trisha McGovern, violins; Katherine Reynolds, viola; and Daniel Cline, cello -- will play 3 Idylls by Frank Bridge.

Rhapsodic opening II

Pianist Gleb Ivanov will be the soloist in Sergei Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini, op.43, as the Fort Smith Symphony opens its 91st season with a concert titled "Musical Kaleidoscope," 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the ArcBest Corp. Performing Arts Center, 55 S. Seventh St., Fort Smith.

Also on the program, Music Director John Jeter will conduct Short Ride in a Fast Machine by John Adams; the Suite from Hary Janos, op.35, by Zoltan Kodaly, with cimbalom soloist Lawrence Kaptain; and Bolero by Maurice Ravel.

Wright stuff

Jeff Shannon, professor of architecture at the University of Arkansas Fay Jones School of Architecture, will give a lecture titled "Frank Lloyd Wright's Robie House: A New Perspective," 6 p.m. Tuesday in the lecture hall of the Arkansas Arts Center in MacArthur Park, East Ninth and Commerce streets.

The Architecture and Design Network, comprising the Arkansas Arts Center, the Central Arkansas Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and the Fay Jones School of Architecture, will hold a pre-talk reception at 5:30 p.m. Admission is free. Email ardenetwork@icloud.com.

Ballet master class

Tales at UCA

Radio show Tales From the South will be recorded live at 7:30 p.m. Monday on the lawn in front of McAlister Hall, University of Central Arkansas, 201 Donaghey Ave., Conway. Musical group Slings and Arrows will perform at 6:30 p.m. Food will be for sale on-site at 6.

The evening's readers are UCA faculty member Mark Spitzer and master of fine arts degree candidate Lynne Landis. The set will include artwork by UCA student Tim Daulong. The show will air on a date to be announced on public radio station KUAR-FM, 89.1.

78 Project

The Oxford American magazine and the Central Arkansas Library System Ron Robinson Theater will show The 78 Project Movie at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the theater, 100 Rock St., Little Rock.

Inspired by the field recordings of legendary folklorist Alan Lomax, director/producer Alex Steyermark and producer/recordist Lavinia Jones Wright created an ongoing documentary journey to record today's musicians with yesterday's technology -- one microphone, an authentic 1930s direct-to-disc recorder and a blank lacquer disc -- to cut 78 rpm records. The film includes performances by musicians and appearances by Grammy-winning producers, collectors and curators from the Library of Congress and Smithsonian Institution.

Oxford American Associate Editor Maxwell George will introduce the film and moderate a post-screening question-and-answer session with the filmmakers, who will make a live 78 rpm recording with a Little Rock musician onstage. Tickets are $10. Call (800) 293-5949 or visit metrotix.com.

Recovery Jam

Better Community Development Inc. will host the 10th annual Recovery Jam 2014, coinciding with National Recovery Month, to raise awareness about mental and/or substance abuse disorders, 4-8 p.m. Monday in the River Market Pavilion, 400 President Clinton Ave., Little Rock.
