STATE OF THE ART

Contributors, host of VIPS get first peek at new exhibit

BENTONVILLE -- Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art pulled out all the stops for the private opening of its new groundbreaking contemporary art exhibition, "State of the Art: Discovering American Art Now," outsizing the museum's opening party three years ago. More than 1,200 attended.

The Sept. 11 party spread throughout the museum, with specific gatherings for artists, sponsors and certain members. About 70 of the show's 102 artists made the trip to Northwest Arkansas. Many of them were charmed by downtown Bentonville's historic yet artsy appeal and the architecture and collection at Crystal Bridges. They also seemed humbled to be chosen for such a noteworthy exhibition, one that has garnered national attention.

It's no secret that museum president Don Bacigalupi is an ardent fan of contemporary art. He and curator Chad Alligood combed all regions of the country, making nearly 1,000 visits to artists' studios. From the 102 artists picked, 227 works are in the exhibition, representing unique mediums one could only imagine.

"This is one of the things we've talked about since the day we met," Alice Walton said of Bacigalupi during an artists-only reception that kicked off the night. The artists came from points far and near, including Los Angeles, New Orleans, New York and Houston.

Said Alligood: "This was the opportunity of my life. It confirmed my belief that art is made in the encounter."
