Haunted house set for Oct. 9 opening

Halloween fun will start early in North Little Rock when the city's Police Athletic League sponsors the Haunted High School starting Oct. 9, the group announced last week.

The former North Little Rock Alternative School building, at 13th and Main streets, will be the location for the annual fundraiser for the nonprofit group that provides free participation on sports teams and other activities for area youths.

This will be the first year the haunted house is held at the school location. In past years, the group has had the Haunted Hospital at the site of the former Baptist Memorial Hospital, No. 1 Pershing Circle, and the Tavern of Terror at the site of the former Checkmate Club building, Fourth and Poplar streets. Neither building exists today.

Dates will be Oct. 9-11, Oct. 16-18, Oct. 23-25 and Oct. 27-31. Times will be 7-11 p.m. each night except Halloween night, when the attraction will stay open until a time to be determined.

Admission will be $10 per person with all proceeds and donations to benefit the Police Athletic League. Volunteers are being sought.

More information is available at the group's website, arkansaspal.com.

Hydrant testing begins Wednesday

Fire hydrant testing will begin Wednesday in North Little Rock and continue each week through the end of October, North Little Rock Fire Marshal John Pflasterer announced.

Because hydrant testing involves the increased flow of water from the fire hydrants, discolored water might be noticeable to some residents during the testing. Fire Department crews will conduct the tests during daylight hours to reduce inconvenience to residents and businesses. If rust-colored water is detected, it is still safe to drink, according to a Fire Department news release that recommended residents wait until the water turns clear again to wash clothes.

Hydrant testing helps North Little Rock to maintain its ISO 2 insurance rating while also helping to prevent potential problems with a hydrant, the news release said.

North Little Rock residents should receive in their utility bill an informational flier that includes a map and schedule of when different areas of the city will be affected.

The North Little Rock Fire Department and Central Arkansas Water are responsible for the maintenance of public fire hydrants within the city limits. The Fire Department will conduct the inspections, and Central Arkansas Water would make any needed repairs.

Campaigns issued sign-rule reminder

All candidates for the Nov. 4 general election are being reminded to avoid placing their campaign signs in city rights of way, North Little Rock Mayor Joe Smith said.

Smith said he has directed city code enforcement officers to remove any campaign signs that are in city rights of way.

Any confiscated signs can be picked up at the North Little Rock Code Enforcement office, 701 W. 29th St.

Fire-safety event to be held Oct. 7

Firefest, the annual fire prevention and safety festival sponsored by the North Little Rock Fire Department, will be 5-8 p.m. Oct. 7 in the Kroger grocery parking lot, 2509 McCain Blvd.

Firetrucks, emergency vehicles, a Kids Fire Obstacle Course, hot dogs and activities will be available during the event. Firefest is used to help draw attention to Fire Prevention Week, which is Oct. 5-11 this year.

More information is available by emailing city Fire Marshal John Pflasterer at fmo@nlr.ar.gov.
