The time difference

United Cerebral Palsy fundraiser at Governor’s Mansion nets $30,000

Quite a difference a Thursday night makes from a Monday afternoon. Then, a legion of folks in wheelchairs and their advocates descended on the governor's office demanding an audience. Thursday night, it was friends and supporters of United Cerebral Palsy of Central Arkansas at the Governor's Mansion, munching on canapes served from his kitchen, welcomed in by first lady Ginger Beebe.

That's politics for you -- fight hard, play harder.

In truth the group that marched to bring attention to the Community First Choice Option on Sept. 14 and 15 isn't aligned with United Cerebral Palsy of Central Arkansas (although certainly the missions are consonant).

United Cerebral Palsy's third annual fundraiser -- Once Upon a Time -- raised nearly $30,000 on the sales of eight live auction packages and more than 60 silent auction items, sponsorships and admission.

The big ticket items were white gold and diamond earrings from R. Carey Art & Jewelry valued at $6,600, according to the United Cerebral Palsy program (the baubles sold for $2,250); a seven night stay at a Costa Rican villa valued at $5,000 ($4,000); a two night stay at the Delta Resort & Spa for a duck hunt valued at $5,200 ($2,000); and a painting, In Bloom, by local artist Matthew Gore valued at "priceless" ($1,800).
