Orgeron to speak at LR TD Club

Former college football coach Ed Orgeron will be the guest speaker today at the Little Rock Touchdown Club’s luncheon at the Embassy Suites in west Little Rock.

Orgeron, 53, was 10-25 in three seasons as head coach in Ole Miss in 2005-2005, and 6-2 as interim head coach at USC last season. Orgeron was an assistant strength coach at Arkansas in 1986-1987 and has also been an assistant coach at Miami, Syracuse and Tennessee and in the NFL for the New Orleans Saints.

He is not coaching this season.

Lunch will be served at 11 a.m. and the program will start at 11:50. Admission is $20 for members and $30 for non-members.

Arkansas sweeps Mississippi State

Meredith Hays had 11 kills and Arkansas beat Mississippi State 25-14, 25-19, 25-18 on Sunday in Fayetteville

Chanell Clark-Bibbs and Ana Sofia Jusino each had nine kills for the Razorbacks (8-7, 2-0), while Bailee Hankenson had 32 assists and Monica Bollinger had 10 digs.

UALR stays unbeaten in Sun Belt

Senior Edina Begic had 17 kills and 11 digs, the 50th time in her career she’s had 10 or more in those categories, to lead UALR to a 16-25, 25-15, 25-22, 25-11 victory over Appalachian State on Sunday in Boone, N.C.

Sonja Milanovic added 15 kills and 15 digs for the Trojans (10-4, 4-0). It was Coach Van Compton’s 200th career Sun Belt victory.

Bears get first conference victory

Kate Koch scored in the 22nd minute to spark Central Arkansas to a 2-0 victory over Northwestern State on Sunday in Conway, its first Southland Conference victory of the season.

Koch’s goal that gave UCA (5-4, 1-1) a 1-0 lead at halftime was her first of the season, then Shelby Wilson added another goal in the 68th minute to provide the final score. The Bears held a 13-8 advantage in shots over the Demons (3-8-1, 0-3-1).

UALR falls at home

The UALR soccer team gave up two goals in the final 12 minutes — the last being an own goal — of a 2-1 loss to Texas State on Sunday in Little Rock, its second consecutive loss.

The Trojans, who won their first nine games of the season, took a 1-0 lead on Kailie Holloway’s goal in the 34th minute. It stayed that way until late in the second half when Lynsey Curry scored in the 79th minute. Then Texas State pushed the ball toward the UALR net, and a UALR player knocked it into the net for the game-winner.

Trojans goalkeeper Bre Ilkuf had seven saves. UALR was held to one shot on goal.

ASU falls at home

Jenna Caudle scored in the 35th minute to give Appalachian State a 1-0 victory over Arkansas State on Sunday in Jonesboro.

ASU (3-8, 0-2) was held to three shots on goal by Appalachian State (5-6, 2-0). ASU goalkeeper Amanda Lee had seven saves.
