Crittenden County sales tax canceled after hospital closure

A Crittenden County sales and use tax dedicated to hospital renovations won't go into effect Wednesday after a circuit court enjoined its collection, the state Department of Finance and Administration said Tuesday.

The 1 percent countywide sales and use tax was approved by about 85 percent of voters in June for equipment, operation and maintenance of Crittenden Regional Hospital in West Memphis, which closed its doors in late August, citing "insurmountable obstacles," the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette previously reported.

The county’s tax rate will remain at 1.75% due to the court order "until further notice," the finance department said.

Taxpayers who have questions or comments may call the finance department at (501) 682-7104.
