LR schools hosting forums on facilities

The Little Rock School District is hosting public forums at two high schools this week on the districtwide facility recommendations recently prepared by a consulting team headed by Fanning-Howey architects and engineers of Indianapolis.

The first forum will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday at J.A. Fair High School, 13420 David O. Dodd Road.

That will be followed by a forum at 6 p.m. Thursday at McClellan High. McClellan is at 9417 Geyer Springs Road.

Those sessions will be followed with additional forums later in the month: Hall High, Oct. 20; Central High, Oct. 21; and Parkview High, Oct. 22.

The Little Rock School Board hired the consultant team last year to evaluate all school buildings in the district and make recommendations for repairs, renovations and new buildings.

Some of those recommendations call for building a new McClellan High on a new site, remodeling the current McClellan and using it to replace the existing Cloverdale Middle School, which is built on unstable soil.

Other recommendations call for a new David O. Dodd Elementary School and possible new Bale and Meadowcliff elementary buildings, along with a 50-classroom addition at Little Rock Central High.

The consultants also recommended "re-purposing" Carver Magnet and Rockefeller elementary schools into pre-kindergarten centers that would no longer serve kindergarten-through-fifth-grade pupils.

The Little Rock School Board has planned to set building priorities after the conclusion of the five forums.
