Softball: Fayetteville tops Springdale

FAYETTEVILLE -- Megan Luetkemeyer and Anna Koch each drove in two runs Tuesday to lead Fayetteville to a 10-2 win over Springdale High.

Fayetteville (5-3, 1-1 7A-West) continued its hot post-spring break hitting, compiling 12 hits a night after recording 16 in a 17-3 win over Mountain Home.

"When you take 10 days off and roll right back into it, I'm happy with the way the kids have performed," Fayetteville coach Jason Shirey said. "Maybe we just all needed a little bit of a break. They've come back swinging the bats well."

Fayetteville jumped out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to Cortnye Pool's sacrifice fly and Luetkemeyer's RBI single in the bottom of the first inning. The Lady Purple'Dogs never looked back with Pool on the mound, limiting Springdale for most of the night.

Pool (2-1) gave up just five hits in six innings, striking out five and walking two.

"She threw well tonight," Shirey said. "We had a couple mini-letdowns there, but she came right back."

Fayetteville tacked on three more runs during a two-out rally with the help of some untimely Springdale errors in the bottom of the third. An error extended the inning and another kept it going as Fayetteville stretched its lead to 5-0.

"I think Erika (Ramirez) threw OK. We just need to be able to step up and make some big plays and get out of those innings," Springdale coach Ashlee Kemp said. "String some hits together offensively. Base-running errors really hurt us and broke momentum. We just need the total package, and we're missing a couple things."

Springdale (3-6, 0-2) responded in the fourth, putting runners in scoring position when Destini Jones singled and Maegan Kelley doubled to lead off the inning. But Springdale only managed to score a single run on a Leigh Anne Gwatney RBI single, leaving the bases loaded and trailing 5-1.

"I think that was a big momentum boost for us right there," Shirey said.

Koch, Rachel Pohl and Emily Lyles all had RBI singles as part of a four-run fifth inning, which stretched Fayetteville's lead to 9-1. Both teams added a run in the sixth.

Koch finished 3-for-4 at the plate for Fayetteville. Gwatney was 3-for-3 for Springdale.

Fayetteville will host Anderson, Minn., in a nonconference matchup today before diving back into 7A-West play Thursday against Springdale Har-Ber. Springdale returns to action Thursday at home against Bentonville.
