Cyrus slams Cotton on Twitter after CNN remarks

Miley Cyrus called her 19.3 million Twitter followers to action in response to U.S. Sen. Tom Cotton’s comments regarding Arkansas’ efforts to pass a Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which has been criticized by many as discriminatory.

Appearing on CNN’s The Situation Room, Cotton told Wolf Blitzer “it’s important we have a sense of perspective about our priorites.”

“In Iran they hang you for the crime of being gay,” he said.

The pop star sent out a link to a ThinkProgress article detailing the senator's take and sent a series of tweets in response.

“Senator Cotton thinks gay community needs to get 'perspective' cuz 'In Iran they hang you for the crime of being gay,'" Cyrus tweeted.

She urged her followers to call Cotton’s office, tweeting “Let's stir some s*** up! Senator Cotton (202) 224-2353!!!! Happy Hippies call & express why freedom is important to us & our country!”

Arkansas' attempts at passing a religious freedom law has incited national debate and protests, with opponents warning it would allow discrimination against gay and transgender people.

Cotton's reaction comes after Gov. Asa Hutchinson on Wednesday rejected a religious freedom law, House Bill 1228, telling lawmakers it needed to more closely mirror federal law before he would sign it.

One day after requesting changes to the law, the Arkansas House voted 76-17 to pass Senate Bill 975, a replacement for HB1228. The measure is now law after Hutchinson gave it his almost immediate signature Thursday afternoon.

Calls to Cotton's offices were not immediately returned Thursday afternoon.
