GOIN' RED FOR THE FOUNDERS

Message: Power in believing spurs Deltas to social change

The Little Rock Alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. celebrated Founders Day with an admonition in its theme: "Honor the Legacy ... Remember the Kneel." The Deltas-only program took place March 22 in the ballroom of the Embassy Suites in Little Rock. Members wore red dresses and ensembles to reflect the sorority's official colors of crimson and cream.

Gwen Ziegler gave opening remarks for the early dinner program, recalling sorority founders as well as the founding of the chapter. The program also included greetings by LaSonya Campbell and selections by the Delta Choir.

Chapter President Crystal Barker introduced Cynthia M.A. Butler-McIntyre, past national president of the sorority. Delivering a witty, inspirational message with a rapid, staccato style, Butler-McIntyre reached back to her childhood Christmas memories and belief in Santa and other holiday figures to tell the Deltas that "there's power in believing." Reminding them that "you came here today because of other people" -- and what they believed -- she painted a theoretical picture of the events surrounding the sorority's birth and worked her way up to current social issues. "It's our turn to make a difference," she said.

Honors and awards given near program's end included the Spirit of Delta Award, presented to Carolyn Nolly; the Delta of the Year Award, presented to LaSandra Rogers; the Five Point Thrust Awards; and recognition of 25- and 50-year sorority members.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was founded Jan. 13, 1913, by 22 women at Howard University in Washington.
