Keuchel sharp as Astros beat Kluber, Indians

HOUSTON -- When the Houston Astros didn't have a hit with two outs in the sixth inning against Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber, new manager A.J. Hinch wasn't concerned.

Jose Altuve was coming up to bat.

"I think he's going to get a hit every time," Hinch said of last year's AL batting champion.

Hinch was right to be confident. Altuve ended the no-hit bid with a single and later scored to back a combined three-hitter by Dallas Keuchel (Arkansas Razorbacks) and two relievers in Houston's 2-0 win over the Cleveland Indians.

Altuve stole second and scored on a single by George Springer, who was thrown out trying to stretch it to a double.

Making his first opening-day start, Keuchel (1-0) allowed 3 hits and struck out 4 in seven innings.

"I think the city of Houston has waited a long time for a winner and we're trying to get back there," Keuchel said. "Granted it's only one game, but we have the guys to succeed and I think we're going to show some people that this year."

Tony Sipp threw a scoreless eighth and new closer Luke Gregerson worked a 1-2-3 ninth for the save.

Jake Marisnick also drove in a run for the Astros.

Kluber (1-0) yielded 3 hits and 2 runs with 7 strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings a day after agreeing to a five-year, $38.5 million contract.

ROYALS 10, WHITE SOX 1 Yordano Ventura pitched six solid innings before leaving with a thumb cramp, and Alex Rios hit a three-run home run in his Kansas City debut against the visiting Chicago White Sox. Ventura (1-0) was replaced by Kelvin Herrera in the seventh after crumpling to the ground following a strike to Adam LaRoche. Ventura will be evaluated later this week, but Royals trainers said it is not believed to be serious. Rios, who had three hits, homered in a five-run seventh with Kendrys Morales and Alex Gordon aboard. Gordon stroked a two-run single in the inning. Jose Abreu homered for Chicago. Jeff Samardzija (0-1) yielded 5 runs and 6 hits in 6-plus innings in his White Sox debut.
